Women’s Institutes
RONGOTEA Mrs. W. A. Churchill presided over the annual meeting and extended a welcome to Mrs. Child, of Palmerston North (member of the Manawatu executive), Mrs. Davison, senr., and Mrs. Ellis (a new member). After discussing correspondence from the Y.W.C.A. in connection with the newly acquired rooms for use by that organisation, it was decided to forward a donation of one guinea towards expenses. The secretary, Mrs. E. A. Gust, i read a comprehensive report of the ' work of the institute, which. showed a 1 creditable record of patriotic work. The treasurer, Mrs. C. Davison, presented the financial statement, which showed a ’ good credit in the general account and, in spite of the many calls upon it, a splendid credit in the eraer gcncy account. Mrs. Barker congratulated the treasurer on her excellent statement and handling of funds. The president spoke appreciatively of the work of the secretary, who, although coming entirely new to the work, had carried out her duties in a manner which it would be difficult to better. It was with great regret members learned that, owing to numerous home ties, Mrs. Gust could no longer carry out her duties as secretary. Regret was also expressed that Mrs. C. Davison was unable to remain treasurer. Everyone had given loyal support to all undertakings, and the president referred to the work of Mrs. H. V. Caverhill (a retiring vice president), who had given of her best to the institute since its inception. She had filled the three chief offices and was always ready and willing to assist in any institute function, filling in many a breach, and appreciation of her services was placed on rocord. Mrs. Child took the chair and spoke briefly to members, congratulating them on their work. As there was just sufficient members nominated for tho committee, there was no election. Mrs. W. A. Churchill was reelected president, and the committee comprises Mesdames S. Barker, W. A. Davison, L. Duker, E. A. Gust, W. Hurst, A. Jessop, F. C. McKay, Olsen, T. Patton, M. Wriglit and G. Wellborn. Mrs. H. V. Caverhill gave the happy thought for the month, and Mrs. L. Duker took as her Golden Thread a very human sketch of the influence of the Women's Institute, entitled “The Builders.’' A number of letters were received from men serving overseas expressing appreciation of the Christmas parcels sent from the RongoteaCarnarvon Institutes. At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mesdames W. A. Davison and T. Patton were elected vice-presidents, Mrs. S. Barker secretary, Mrs. F. McKay assistant secretarv and Mrs. G. Wenborn treasurer. The Melody ballroom behind the Opera House, Palmerston North, will be the mecca of dancers to-night. A quickstep competition is scheduled. ■
