A Source of Pure Water

A well-known citizen of the borough, Mr. S. P. Skinner, is firmly convinced that thousands of pounds are going to bo wasted by the proposed new water pipe-line. He has a well in his property that, with the two-inch pipe already laid on, can supply 42U(Jgals. of water per hour, lie guarantees it can keep a six-inch pipe full. This supply has been offered repeatedly to the borough but has always been politely refused. One reason given was the doubtful purity of the water. To confound those critics Air. Skinner has gone to the trouble and expense of having it analysed himself. The Pathological and Bacteriological Department of the Palmerston North Hospital reports that the sample has no B Coli bacterial content at all, and a plate count for colonies per c.c. at 37deg. temperature, was also nil. This means nothing much to us ordinary folk but the following report is easy to understand: ‘‘Very good water bacteriologically. safe for drinking. 7 7 That covers quality plus quantity. As regards it being on private land, the worthy owner is prepared to sign a deed for as many years as they like, giving the water free of charge. All that is needed apparently is a pump and motor sufficiently powerful to overcome the pressure in the borough mains. The underground stream is 30ft. below the surface and is at present tapped only by a 2in. pipe.
