The Kgawapurua Patriotic Society is tendering a farowell to Seaman Robert Waugh in the Ngawapurua Hall tonight. George Herrick is supplying the music and the usual country supper will bo served. At the recent Progressive Association meeting Mr. Whittington mentioned the sale of fish, in the town and thought the by-law in regard to storing and exhibiting fish should bo enforced. He also mentioned that a dog was always in the fish-shop. The gas manager’s report at the recent borough council meeting revealed unaccounted-for gas totalling 7.1,590 c. ft. out of a total of 248,990 c. ft. for the month of February. Expenditure at £l7B 15s lid was in excess of receipts £l4O 4s lid while 20 tons of coal had been carbonised. The town clerk reported that nine drivers 7 and five heavy traffic licenses had been issued. Building permits numbered three. Rato collection for the current year to date amounts to 99 per cent. The credit balance at February meeting was £IOSO 8s lOd; at the March meeting £S63 5s Id; and the bank credit balance was £590 4s 4d. Cr. Galbraith thought the town clerk should be congratulated on the 99 per cent, result of rate collection. The Mayor agreed it was very good indeed. Through the £4OO which the borough council had in hand, having to bo used up on the installation of the diesel pump at the water works recently, the council has been forced to stand down some of its employees until the cud of the financial year, as there is insufficient money available to pay them. Mr. Forbes said he regretted having to take this step as there was plenty of work for them. Arrangements had been made to do necessary improvements to Normandy Street, which now would have to be held over. The borough council has received advice from Mr. K. J. Holyoake, M.P., who made representations to the Minister regarding the notification of trains carrying overseas troops home in time for them to be met. Mr. Holyoake lias been advised that instructions have been given to the Army Office to notify Mr. C. Forbes at the earliest opportunity. In this connection Mr. Forbes said he was arranging to have the Presbyterian Church bell rung for three minutes half an hour before the trains carrying the men arrive. At the last borough council meeting Mr. Whillans asked if some bonus could not be made to Mr. H. Petterson, the gasworks manager, for his work in connection with the recent water crisis. Air. Petterson for 19 days had put in nearly 20 hours per day. The Mayor said that they were very grateful for what Air. Petterson had done and suggested a grant of £2O. This was agreed upon and the gift is to be free of tax. A letter of thanks is to be sent to Air. James Hutchinson for the use of his tractor at that critical time. Although it was not required it was standing by all the time in case of need.
