Foxton

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) presided at the monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council. Also present were Councillors D. R. Barron, R. Cocfiran, D. Ellwood, L. Fletcher, H. H. Podmore and E. Titcombe. The town clerk stated that he had dub conveyed to Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Shorthouse congratulations on behalf of Foxton residents, on the winning of the D.F.C. by one of their sons, SquadronLeader J. S. Shorthouse. In an interesting reply. Mr. Shorthouse said that all three of liis sons were pilots, Jack flying Lancasters, Bob Spitfires and Peter Warhawks in the Pacific. Councillors considered this a splendid record indeed. The clerk was requested to convey the sympathy of the council to the family of the late Mrs. F. J. Parkin. It was decided to issue a reminder that before any building operations are com menced, permits must be applied for. Instances of several breaches of the by-law were mentioned and further offenders wil. be prosecuted. Attention is drawn to the growth of noxious weeds on the south side of Purcell Street. As this is a boundary roao between the county and the borough, notices are to be served on the offending property owners. Notice is also to be served on a property owner in Norbiton Road whose maerocarpa hedge is overgrowing the drain. The treasurer reported that over 96 per cent, of the rates levied for the current year had already been collected. The Chamber of Commerce reiterated its request for the erection of a cycle stand in front of the Post Office', stating that it was unlawful to place a cycle against a public building. It was decided to ascertain the views of the Department on the subject. A letter was received from the presi dent of the Cycling Club asking the council to trim and top the trees in and around Victoria Park. It was agreed to do this when the time is opportune. Cr. Podmore drew attention to the accommodation of the Foxton Maternitj Home as revealed by reports made by the Palmerston North Hospital Board. He recalled the fact that the Foxton Citizens Committee had advocated a four-bed hospital, but without success. It was decided to ask the local board member tvtake up the matter with the hospital board, with a view to ascertaining the number of cases refused admission to the home for lack of accommodation. The district electors list for the borough was approved and in reply to a question, the Mayor (Mr. Perreau) said he would again offer his services as Mayor for a further term. The thanks of the council are to be conveyed to Mrs. A. Heasman for a dona tion of books for the library. The school committee advised that the instruction of school children in the use of pedestrian crossings was now in the hands of the headmaster.
