Children’s Playground for Feilding

GIFT OF £250 TOWARDS THE COST Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Smith, of Feilding, have promised a sum of £250 towards the cost of a children’s playground for Feilding. This announcement was made at last evening’s meeting of the Borough Council by the Mayor (Mr. T. L. Sqddon), who said: “For some time this town has felt the ■ need for a children's playground for as you know for a considerable time now the equipment at Johnston Park has not been available and has had to be stored to prevent its falling into further disrepair. There is no doubt in my mind that a children's playground is required in Feilding and would be a welcome addition to our slender amenities. The considerations of cost and site have embarrassed the Council but the first can now be overcome by the generous action of Councillor and Mrs. Sydney Smith who have authorised me to say that they are prepared to contribute up to £250 towards the cost of the playground, it is a most generous and opportune offer and our grateful thanks are due to the donors. Now, gentlemen, the problem of site can he overcome. Recently, in company with several Councillors, I have inspected various possible sites for a playground but I have come back to Denbigh Square and I feel confident that there we have the most suitable available site. If you agree then I shall be delighted to tell Councillor and Mrs. Smith that we are in the happy position of being able to avail ourselves of their munificent offer.’’ The Council fully discussed the guestion of a site and finally the question of the offer was referred to the reserves committee for investigation of a suitable site. The Mayor proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Councillor and Mrs. Smith for: j their very generous offer and this was , carried by acclamation.
