Dahlia Show
In spite of the very adverse growing conditions experienced this season, some particularly choice blooms were displayed at the Palmerston North Horticultural Society's annual dahlia show held at the Opera House yesterday. Exhibits were received from all over the Manawatu district and a large number of the public took the opportunity of viewing the flowers. The chairman of the committee, Mr. A. J. Shailer, in introducing Mr. J. A. Nash, the patron, thanked the exhibitors, judges and the stewards for their fine work which helped so much to make the show Mr. Nash, in opening the exhibition, remarked that the display of flowers reflected great credit upon growers who, in spite of many difficulties, had been able to produce such excellent blooms. He referred to the trade exhibits as being particularly fine and said that the number and quality of the entries received from school children was extremely good. The fact that girls of higher age should be encouraged to compete was stressed by Mr. Nash, as the younger enthusiasts of to-day would be the exhibitors tomorrow. Lord Bledisloe was still having dahlias sent to him from the Horticultural Society and was able to grow excellent flowers from the roots sent to him from New Zealand. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. J. Shailer and her helpers. The judges were: Dahlias, Mr. J. Gibbs, Danncvirke; cut blooms, Mr. E. Sweetman, Palmerston North; vegetables, Messrs. Goodwin and Cederman from the Horticultural Division; decorative, adults, Mrs. W. Lett, Levin; decorative, children, Mrs. R. A. McKenzie, Feilding. The winner of the champion bloom was Mr. J.
