Manawatu District Trades Council

At the last meeting of the Manawatu District Trades Council, Mr. C. R. Murphy presided over a good attendance. A welcome was extended to Mr. Banks, a newly appointed delegate from the freezing industry; also to Mr. Christiansen, a visitor at the Council’s meeting. The - Government having reduced the area coming under the jurisdiction of the local building committee, meant that two delegates would be required to represent Paimerston North’s employees. Mr. C. Stratford and Mr. A. Humphreys are now representing the workers on the local building committee. The Council was requested by the Federation of Labour to give an opinion on the 11 pay-as-you-earn” system of income tax payments. This matter was hold over until the next meeting so as to give delegates an opportunity to obtain the views of their respective organisations. Another matter held over for the same reason was the collecting ot funds for the purchase of sheepskins on behalf of the Soviet Union. Stabilisation and the work done by the Price Tribunal came under review and it was decided to request the Minister concerned to establish an officer of the Price Tribunal as a permanent resident in Palmerston North. It was decided that Mr. J. Hodgens, M.P., be invited to meet the Council to discuss the manpower situation. It was resolved that the Council take an active part in the coming municipal elections. Mr. Murphy reported on the meeting held recently between the executive of the Council and members of the Women’s Co-op. Guild in reference to closer coordination of the new and rapidly increasing number of women employed in industries, and the existing organisations covering those industries. This matter is being given further consideration by the executive. A request was forwarded to the Federation of Laboui that the Government be asked to give serious consideration to the rationing ot coal.
