Chinese Closing on Enemy Strongnold

ADVANCE IN CHEKIANG NEW YORK, Sept. 1. The Chinese forces storming across Chekiang, the “bomb Tokio'' province in South-eastern China, intercepted and routed Japanese reinforcements rushed forward iu a frantic effort to halt General Chiang Kai-shek's forces approaching Kinnwa, reports the Chungking correspondent of the Associated Press. The Chinese ambushed Japanese forces moving up the railway between Kinwha and Lanchi, while another Chinese column advanced from Tangki to Kinhwa. The Chinese military spokesman said that Kinhwa was menaced by a nutcracker offensive along two railways. Japanese forces had been cleared entirely from the southern areas of Chekiang. Lishui and Cbuhsien airfields are now both in Chinese hands. They are within bombing range of Japanese cities. A Reuter report from Chungking says that the Japanese appear to be falling back to the positions they held when they began their drive against Chiang Kai-shek ? s troops from the coast.
