Pig Hunting in Taranaki
ILLUSTRATED ADDRESS TO CITY ROTARIANS The speaker at the Palmerston North Rotary Club yesterday was Mr. George Da wick, who gave a very interesting talk on pig hunting in Taranaki. Mr. W. B. Tennent was in the chair and the vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Horace Cunninghame. Mr. Dawick illustrated his address with a film taken by himself during the pig hunt and ho explained that the expert hunters with whom he went out had wonderfully intelligent dogs specially bred for pig hunting. The first part of the film was devoted to these dogs and their training. It was considered that the “make up" of the ideal dog was 25 per cent, bulldog, 25 per cent. Airedale and 50 per cent, cattle heeler. Before commencing that part covering the hunt, Mr. Dawick explained that the pigs were increasing rapidly and that they were doing a tremendous lot of damage to pastures and to flocks, also that a boar could kill up to 15 sheep in one night. The pictures of the “kills” were close-ups and they showed tho wonderfully skilful manner in which the dogs carried out their part of the work. Later Mr. Dawick showed a film from [America. It was really a very fine i“Gazette,” beginning with the training of naval cadets and parachute jumping, tanks and rough-riding cavalrymen. Next came a series of “shots” covering the hair-raising stunts performed by dare-devils in crashing cars, bucking motor-boats and other sports which lend themselves to “mad-hat-ters.” Next came a graphic close-up of the bombardment of the French worships at Oran and, to end with, was a wonderful. picture claimed to be the biggest camera scoop of all time. It dealt with the buckling and destruction of the Tacoma steel bridge during a gale. To finish with Mr. Dawick showed a coloured film of scenes in and around Palmerston city*.
