Foxton Beach
From Our Own Correspondent. Holiday Weather The weather over tho holiday period left nothing to be desired in the way of sunshine, which was fully appreciated by visitors and campers alike. Bathing adherents were able to indulge in unlimited doses of sea and sun, and every day saw a large number surfing at the ocean beach or swimming in the quieter waters of tho river. Campers have not been so numerous this season, but this is explained by the fact that large crowds are taking advantage of the camping facilities in close proximity to the exhibition. Passing of the Old Year The passing of the old year was celebrated by a goodly crowd of residents and visitors, and parties paraded the beach with musical instruments until a late hour. When the hour of twelve struck, the clamour was general. A largo ring was formed on the beach and “Auld Dang Syne” was sung with gusto, expressions of goodwill sounding on every side. New Year Dance Tho New Year dance held annually, following the sports, by the Beach Improvement Society, was an outstanding success, and the funds of tho society benefited considerably as a result. General A mild earthquaiie, preceded by a long, loud rumbling noise, w r as felt here shortly after 7 o’clock on Sunday morning, the vibrations lasting for several seconds. When motoring along tho FoxtonBcach highway on a recent morning, Mr. W. Jay ran over and killed a fully grown opossum. For some time it has been persistently rumoured that opossums were to be found in and around Foxton and the beach, and Air. Jay’s accidental “kill” proves that the rumours were founded in fact.
First-footers were having a night out in the traditional manner after 12 o’clock on New Year’s Eve, both in the various houses and around the camps. Everything was orderly, although there was a general searching for gates, etc., next morning. Children’s Sports Tho Beach Improvement .Society’s annual sports and children’s day was again an outstanding success, with surprisingly fine weather, so necessary for gatherings of this description. A new departure was the running of all events on the sports area proper, tho large expanse of level grassy ground proving ideal for the purposo. Adequate parking space was available for cars, and a record crowd attended, the public responding generously with cash donations for the benefit of the children, who were royally entertained. Forty babies, aged 18 months and under, were lined up for inspection in the baby show, and the judges, Nurse Shortt am. Mrs. A. Pownall, expressed their inability to conscientiously separate individual babies. Each mother received a gift and a special gift was awarded to Rosalind Robinson (Foxton) and Billy Lewis (Oroua Downs). Sports results:-r—Girls, 6 and under: Mavis Harvey 1, Betty Palato 2.
