Confidence Tricksters
CHRISTMAS METHODS IN SYDNEY There are more ways than one of making money in a big city during -„his festive season, as tho latest batch of confidence men have found out, says the Sydney ‘Sun.” These confidence men are good psychologists. Dressed in leather aprons, without hat or coat, and having tho appearance of truck drivers, they pick their mark—some young man looking in a shop window, probably choosing a present. The confidence man approaches his victim. “Could you use a box of silk stockings? Four pairs in tho box. You can have them for 10s. Worth that a pair, ” is the approach. A flat but impressive box is produced from beneath the apron of the confidence man with an air of great secrecy. “Don’t want them to be seen,” he says. “They come from the wharves. Broached cargo.” And in the box are the carefullyfolded stockings, the silk in which is obviously fine and good. Victims all over the city have been falling all the week, only to discover when they got their “bargains” home that the stockings were factory rejects, badly flawed on the under side, and quite useless as gifts.
