NEWBURY
Mrs. E. A. Shaw presided at the December meeting, and extended a welcome to the visitors and seasonal greetings to everyone. A special welcome was extended to Mrs. Will of Rongotea who had recently returned from overseas. Mrs. Death presented a balance sheet of the flower show recently held, which showed a most satisfactory credit and letters and congratulations were received from neighbouring institutes. Votes of thanks were passed to the men who so kindly holped in so many ways, also to everyone wno assisted to make tho flower show the success it undoubtedly was. A small donation was forwarded to the Newbury Hall committe. A letter of thanks was received from Mr. Toogood on behalf of the Leper stations for a donation toward their Christmas cheer fund. The competition was for a cold sweet, in which Mrs. W. Wilton gained first place, Mrs. E. Phaw 2, and Mrs. Clapcott 3; best bloom, Mrs. W. Wiltonl, Mrs. Clapcott 2, Mrs. S. Death 3. Following a delicious afternoon tea, everyone settled down to listen to a talk of her trip abroad given by Mrs. Will. She touched briefly on on her visit to Scotland and England after war was declared, mentioning that she had offered her services as an ambulance driver until such time as she could secure her passage back to New Zealand and had a very vivid experience of what London was like during the black-outs. Mrs. Will was able to get in touch with the Buckland Institute, Surrey, which is tho Newbury overseas link, and a very pleasant and unexpected surprise was given to the nowbury members when Mrs. Will, on behalf of Buckland Institute, presented Mrs. Shaw (president, with a beautiful table cloth worked by one of their members in colours representing England, Scotland and Ireland. Needless to say, this gift will be much cherished. Mrs. Will was thanked for interesting travel talk and also for bringing the parcel safely to Newbury. Both Mrs. Will anil Mrs. Bowen were accorded a vote of thanks for judging the afternoon's competitions. Christmas gift parcels and greetings wero exchanged. Tho iced Christmas cako was won by Mrs. J. Macaulev. The competition for the next institute meeting, w’hich will bo held in February, will be for a jar of raspberry jam and the best bloom. Tho hostesses will be Mesdames Stanley Knight and Miss Lynch.
