Stock slaughtered at the Dannovirko municipal abattoir during last month comprised 130 cattle (heifers 37, cows 113), 415 sheep (ewes 305, one condemned,. wethers 110), 07 lambs, and 110 pigs (one condemned). Three pigs wero inspected in butchers* shops, none being condemned. Monday night’s meeting of the Dannevirke Borough Council adopted the following recommendation presented by the works committee: —That permission be given to Dannevirke Amusements, Ltd., to affix donna conna panelling upon the back wall of the Town Hall dress circle, at the will of the council, with the right for them to remove it at the termination of their tenancy, provided that the wall is restored to its original state. Cr. H. E. Hibbard, who was elected unojjposed to the vacancy on the Dannevirke Borough Council caused by the resignation of Cr. A. Haines, now residing at Palmerston North, took his seat for the first time at the fortnightly sitting on Monday night, when he was accorded a hearty welcome by the Mayor (Mr. E. Gibbard). For some time the Dannevirke Borough Council has had under consideration an application from the Dannevirke Returned Soldiers* Association for tho setting aside of a portion of the Mangatera cemetery for the burial of returned soldiers. Recently members of tho R.B.A. executive and members of the council made an inspection of the site which it was proposed to set aside, and at the fortnightly meeting of the council on Monday evening a letter was received from the B.b.A. executive formally applying for per-

mission to proceed with the work of laying out plots in the portion which it had been decided should be set aside for the interment of returned soldiers It was decided, on the motion of Cr. C. W. Merrylecs, seconded by Cr. G. I. Anderson, that the application be granted.
