Pahiatua Borough Affairs
The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council was 'held on Monday evening, there being present Mr J. D. Wilson (Mayor) and councillors, S. K. Siddells, W. A. Carthew, G. H. Hodd, W. Brown, S. J. Judd, T. W. Watts, J. W* .Sturton, J. E. Murphy and D. Moriarty. Accounts amounting to £629 4s 5d were passed for payment. Tho Controller of Civil Aviation advised that tho department does not consider tho provision of an emergency ground at Pahiatua as essential to tho -main routes at the present stage, but au inspection of proposed sites will bo made with the view of selecting a site for development at a futuro date. Tho Health Department forwarded a report of tho chemical analysis of a sample of Sowry’s spring-water, but reported unfavourably on tho site. Cr. Brown stated the softness of tho spring at dowry’s was good and ho thought that the services of a water deviner should bo secured to seo if tho underground stream could be traced back and so get a suitable site. Cr. Watts stated that the Health Department had turned the site down and he considered it a waste of time and money going on. Cr. Brown stated that his father would make a survey of tho springs and it would not cost tho council anything. It was moved by the Mayor and carried that Mr Brown, of Mangatainoka, The Mayor stated that a committee had been appointed by the Power Board to come to an agreement over a supply of power to the borough. He was not on the committee and suggested that he could servo as one of the council’s representatives Bince he was fully aware of the details in connection with tho matter. The Mayor and Crs. Siddena and Bturton were deputised to meet the Power Board’s committee and report back to the council. Building applications from Messrs E. 11. Lett and L. J, Rusden were granted subject to the usual conditions. Application forms were received in connection with the building of houses for workers under the 3i per cent, scheme. The Mayor stated that there was a minute to the effect that the council would not go in for a scheme for its workers. He explained, however, that the council was not restricted to its own workers if they wished to adopt the scheme. Cr. Sturton: 1 ‘We have no applica tions for dwellings have wef*’ The Mayor: “No.” Cr. Brown asked what was the position regarding the clock for the Post Office, and in reply the Mayor stated that the department had a rule whereby if a town wanted a clock they had to instal it and maintain it themselves. Cr. Brown stated that a gas-lit clock could be secured for the borough on a rental basis and demonstrated a clock which hed been left by the representative of a firm controlling, the sale of same in the Dominion. The clock, which is adapted specially for night sight, impressed the council and it was decided to invito the representative to wait on the council with full particulars as to samo.
