Electric Power in Manawatu-Oroua

ENGINEER REPORTS ON OUTSIDE ACTIVITIES To the February meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, tho engineer, Mr W. A. Waters, reported as follows on the activities of outside staffs:— General. —During the month the work of deviating the lines to give clearance to the Taonui aerodrome, has been carcried out as opportunity permitted. The new lines are now in service and original lines being dismantled. In addition to the usual extra service lines, the gangs have been mostly engaged repairing storm damage. Four spans of 400 volt line was erected in Campion’s line, while the 3,3000 volt lines were deviated, temporarily, on Foxton line to allow the Public Works Department to carry out road improvement work. Repairs to lines due to gales and lighting have been carried out in Kairanga, Longburn, Ashhurst, Pohangina, Komako, Aorangi and Kai Iwi road. The main lines from Bunnythorpo to Feilding which damaged in the hurricane twelve months ago were straightened up. Work is in hand of duplicating the transformer capacity in Wawa Kawa area to cope with increased load. A shipment of 15 transformers arrived last week, some of which are urgently required for work in hand, the delivery of these transformers taking 7 months to arrive on a cabled order. The work of erecting heavier cables and a 50 k. v. a. transformer has been completed in Haleombe, but a new railway crossing to complete this work is yet to be erected. The Halcombe 11,000 volt line on the hill adjacent to Feilding borough, was deviated to permit alteration to road frontage and the line poles were roblocked and lines restrained. The gales have been responsible for several interruptions on certain 11,000 volt feeders owing to the binders being torn out. Borne of these troubles took quite a time to locate but in all cases at least one car left on the search, as soou as the circuit breaker tripped. New Consumers.—The following new consumers wero given a supply during tho month: —Lighting and heating 11, ranges 8, water heaters 7, motors for milking 2, other motors 11, Industrial motors (10 h.p.) 1, additions to existing installations 1-4, total 54. Neon sign.—With reference to the question of installing a neon sign at the new office in Feilding, a price has beo obtained for a sign under the verandah with “Power Board” facing both ways. This sign will cost £59 nett to the board. I would recommend that we procure this in red letters, as it is a type of sign that shows the advantages of this type of advertising for similar businesses. The Board decided to proceed with the erection of a line between Piri Pin and Apiti.
