Swimmers in Trouble
TWO ASSISTED FROM NAPIER SURF. (Special to “Times.”) NAPIER, Feb. 8The need of some form of life-saving patrol on the Napier beach was agam demonstrated yesterday morning by at least two cases in which swimmers in difficulty were assisted from the water. There was a fairly heavy swoll running in tho morning, and the beach was crowded with swimmers. The largest number wero gathered in front of the baths. The surf, with curling bwmkcrß rolling in one after tho other, was a difficult one except for the strongest and most experienced of swimmers, but their example apparently induced less hardy swimmers to try their skill. The first man in difficulties was Mr Joe Doyle. IJo had been swimming in the breakers with a companion. His companion left tho wster and was watching from tho shore when lie paw Mr Doyle in difficulties and heard his call for help. Fortunately he was able to attract the attention of Mr Eric Am* ner, an experienced surf s\yimmer, who swam to Mr Doyle’s aid and assisted him to the shore. Mr Doyle had soon recovered and was little the worse for his experience. A little later a 12-year-old boy was in difficulties and had to be assisted to the beach. He too, was little the worse for his experience. Not long afterwards a young woman, struck by a breaker, had her knee put out of joint and was carried to tho beach. She, however, had not been swimming in the breakers. The red flags were flown from the Napier Municipal Baths iu the morning.
