Railway Business in Hawke’s Bay
PARALYSIS RESTRICTIONS AFFECT RETURNS. During the four-weekly period ended January 30 the outward passenger traf fie at the Dannevirke railway station showed a heavy decrease owing mainly to the cancellation of the friendly cieties' annual excursion to Napier oi account of infantile paralysis restrictions. There was a sharp decline jn store cattle forwarded, while there was also a decrease in lambs consigned to the freezing works, owing to the late nesa of the season. Thoro was an in crease in building timber, and other goods were normal. In the inwards traffic, there was a decrease in store cattle and sheep; also a heavy decrease in building timber received. Other goods traffic was nonnal. Traffic in general produce from the main centres showed a substantial increase, while there was a decrease in lower rated commodities—manure, lime and coaL Following is a comparative return o traffic for the period, with the corre aponding period last year in parentheses Outwards: Passengers 2068 (4673), cattle 16 (86), sheep 15,427 (18,700), timber 12,600 sup. ft. (nil), goods 308 tons (332 tons), passengers (revenue) £477 (£843), parcels (revenue) £6O (£63), goods £1207 (£1282), miscellaneous £l6 (£l4), total £1760 (£2202). Inwards; Cattle 167 (35), sheep 2918 (1263), timber 27,960 sup. ft. (49500 sup. ft.), goods 1012 tons (1020 tons), i parcels (revenue) £BO (£76), goods (revenue) £1666 (£1869), total £1746 (£1945).
