HAWKE'S BAY APPLICANTS FOR TEACHING PROFESSION to “Times") HASTINGS, Feb. 4. Despite the reduction •in the ar domic standard of qualification, Hawke’s Bay has been unable to fill it* quota oi young people wishingi to enter tifo teaching profession, there being a dearth of applicants alter the second call by the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. The Education Department allotted 50 as the quota for Hawke’s Bay, and when applications were first called Lus year tho academic qualification was fixed, as has been tho case for the pa t lew years, at the holding ot a full or partial pass in the Training College entrant: e examination. Though a tair number of applications wero received, not nearly tho required number possessed the necessary qualifications. As it happened, Hawke’s Jhiy was not *!one in this respect; quite a number of other North Island districts have been unable to fill their quota. The department then advised that fresh application* should be tailed to see if tho quotas could bo but on this occasion it w-as decided that tho academic qualification should be reduced to a lower standard, that ot a higher leaving-certificate, which is grunted to pupils ot secondary schools who, after passing the university entrance examination, take ceitain other subjects. The other requirements, such as physical fitness, personality and suitability for teaching, applied as lor the previous call. Though the reduced standard resulted iu additional applications coming forward, tho response to the board's call for applications Mill left a shortage of nine, and the department bn« been advised that only 41 applicants from Hawke’s Bay possess all the necessary qualifications. It understood that in some district* of the North Island there is a surplus of applications, and it is believed that where the quota has not oeen attained, as is the case with Hawke’s Bay, it will be filled from the surplus of other district*
