Waipawa Men Request Sustenance

COUNCIL’S ACTION (Special to * 'Times”) WAIPAWA, Feb. 2. A request, signed by a majority of Waipawa relief workers, to be placed on sustenance rather than have to continue working under tho No. 5 Scheme was handed to the acting- postmaster, Mr. G. B. Drew, this morning. This brought to a head an element of unrest ( in connection with the employment of relief workers in the borough. Mr. Drew and the Labour Department’s officer, Mr. N. Norris, immediately had a conference with the Mayor, Mr. C. G. E. Harker. and members of the borough council, as a result of which application is to be made by tho council to be allowed to carry on with tho improvements to tho Nellie Jull Park under th© No. 13 Scheme. This provides for a subsidy of £2 15/a week for elected men, the borough to find tho balance of £l 15/- to make up the standard wage of £4 a week of 40 hours. This application, together with tho requisition from tho men to bo placed on sustenance, is .being forwarded to tho Employment Office in Wellington, and pending a reply tho rolief workers have resumed duty under tho old terms. Tho position is that, men on sustenance receivo about 3/6 a week less than those employed under the No. 5 Scheme, but they are required to report twice a week and furnish a declara-j tion of their income from casual work
