Rope Cut From Flagpole And Stretched Across Path

VANDALISM AT PARK (Special to “Times”) HASTINGS, Feb. 3. A further example of vandalism b one of the Hastings borough reserve has been reported to the council b; the superintendent of reserves, Mr. J G. C. Mackenzie, who discovered yes torday that during the week-end th< rope attached to the flagpole near thi children’s playgground at Cornwal Park had been removed and destroyed Not content with merely mischiev ously removing the rope and cutting i into pieces, the miscreants joined ui the shortened pieces again into on long strip, which they then stretc&ei across the main drive through th* park. That this action did not resul in a serious accident is only a matte of providence, for the drive ia fairly extensively by cyclists as wel as a big number of pedestrians, wh* might easily have been tripped by th rope, which was less than three fee above the surface of the drive. Apart from this aspect, the replac ing of the rope is by no means simple for it will be necessary to lower th* pole to tho ground to pass the rop? through the pulleys, and then re-erec the polo. “It is difficult to understand thi mentality of people who will do s» foolish a thing as to tie the rope acroa a roadway like that,” said Mr. Mac kenzie. “It was a very dangeroui thing to do, quite apart from the use lessness of their actions.”
