One-hour Parking for Napier Business Area
COUNCIL’S DECISION (Special to “Times”) NAPIER. Feb. 2. A one-hour parking rule tor certain streets iu the business arsa was adopted by tho Napier Borough Council last night, when after a discuss >a councillors expressed themselves as opx>osed t 0 reverting to tho 20-minut- parking rule, which has not been enforced by the counil during the past few years. A special committee appointed to investigate car-parking brought down a recommendation that in the business area the 20-minute rule should be enforced once more. The Mayor, Mr C. O. Morse, moved the adoption of this recommendation, but an amendment by A. C. B.iggs that tho time limit should be extended to an hour met with the approval of councilors. The amendment was carried. Cr. P. F. Higgins condemned the practice of many b» 'iness men in parking their cars outside their offices all day. Crs A. H. 1). Mayne and C. D. Cox were guilty of this, he added, and he wished that they would »how more consideration for other car-owners. Cr. O. D. Cox: I don’t mind parking my car round a corner somewhere, but I tell you straight, if you adopt a 20minute rule you will drive trade away from town. The retailers don’t like the restriction. On the suggestion of Mr Morse, Cr. Biggs included in his amendment th« fact that the one-hour parking rult was enforceable only during shopping hours. The streets in which the restriction will operate are: Dickens street, fron Hastings street to Dalton street; Emerson street, from Marine Parade to Cliv< Square; Tennyson street, from Hen schell street to Dalton street; Hastingi street, from Browning street to Albiox street; Dalton street, from Dickem street to Emerson street; Markei street.
