Higher Charges Result Of Wage Increase

HANDLING OF PRODUCTS AT MEAT WORKS HASTINGS, Fob. 2. As the direct result of the inter vention of the Minister of Labour, Hon. H. T. Armstrong, in the recent freezing works dispute and his direction to tho companies to increase the wage rate by 3d an hour, there has been an increase made in the charges for handling the products of the works. The two Hawke’s Bay companies, the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Meat Co. and Nelson’s (N.Z.), Ltd., have advised suppliers that as from yesterday thero will be an additional charge made of .025 of a penny per lb. on mutton, pork, veal and lamb, .05 of a penny per lb. on “feeling” wool, the extra charge covering freezing, killing and placing f.o.b. Napier. It is interesting to note that though the additional charge became operative only yesterday the increased pay of 3d an. hour was made retrospective to January 3, tho companies having decided to carry themselves the increased wage burden for the month.
