County Council Rates
ONLY 20 PER CENT COLLECTED POSITION UNSATISFACTORY (Special to “Times”) HASTINGS, Jan. 30. With only a fortnight to go, trie llawke’s Bay County Council has collected only 20 per cent of its current rates, and this laxity on the part of ratepayers is costing the council over £4 a, day by way of interest on its j bank ovex-draft. • County rates amount to £35,000, of j which only £II,OOO has so far been r collected. However, as the Hawke’s Bay wool cheque for the second Napier j sale was paid this morning, amounting to about £690,000, in all probability there will be a last-minute rush on the ' part of ratepayers to meet tliejr obligations. j “Twenty per cent at tills tune of the year is very bad,” said the County Clerk, Mr W J. O’Conneil, this morning. ‘ln earlier years the council could be sure of at least 60 per cent of current ratos at this time of the year. It should be realised that there is no 12& per cent Government subsidy to he received .this ydar by the council, to bo handed on to ratepayers.” 1
