Mortgage Relief LEGAL OFFICES EXPERIENCING

A RUSH (Special to “Times”) NAPIER, Jan. 30. Tlie Hawke’s Bay legal offices have Been inundated with work and long hours have been the rule during the past few weeks, as a result of applications coming forward under the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act, tor the adjustment of mortgages and leases by the Hawke’s Bay Adjustment Commission. All applications must be lodged with the Court by Monday, February 1, and there has been a lastminute rush in Hastings from persons affected by the new legislation. Lawyers have had an exceptionally busy period in their efforts to deal with the fluod of applications on which they have been instructed to act. Yet there , are still a number of people who have delayed their applications and apparently do not realise the fact that, unless 1 they make application, they will not be entitled to receive further relief. The amount of work involved in preparing tho application is considerable, and to obtain all the various details required, the legal offices havo had to carry out extensive research, meaning much additional work. While many of the mortgagors and lessees have empowered solicitors to take charge of their applications, a uumber ot applicants have personally filed at the Court. Although, many applications have been filed, it is not expected that all of these will bo heard by tho Adjustment Commission, as negotiations between the parties concerned will enable a settlement to be effected, and obviate the necessity of a hearing. While the Adjustment Commission has power under tho present legislation to make orders in respect of applications, appeals from its judgments may bo made to tho Court of Review. This, it is understood reverses the procedure followed in former legislation by which the Commission made recommendations only to the Court of Review.
