Motorists Fined

DRIVER CUTS CORNER; LOAD TOO HEAVY. (Special to “Times”) WAIPUKURAU, Jan. 30. Charged with driving a truck on tho Waipawa-Makaretu road in such a manner as to be dangerous, James Victor Lowes, Ashley Clinton, pleaded guilty in the Waipukurau Magistrate's Court yesterday, lie was also charged with failing to keep as far as practicable to the left of the centre of the road, and pleaded guilty to this charge as well. Lowes was convicted and discharged on the first charge and fined £2 10s and costs 18s lid on the second. Constable P. Alullan gave evidence that the accident occurred on a corner where it was customary for traffic to cut across when turning. Lowes had followed the usual practice and had cut the corner as he turned. Charged with operating a heavy l motor vehicle carrying a greater load than it was licensed for, James Herron, carrier, of Wellington, was lined £2 10s and costs 10s. Accused sent a letter saying that he was cariying a load of perishable fruit (bauauas) which were already somewhat over-ripe. In reply to tho Bench, Mr. Yates said he could not agree that tho fruit was over-ripe, as it had to bo put into a warm room to ripen wlum it arrived in Waipawa. Ho said the accused had been convicted of traffic breaches before.
