DRIVER WHO TRIED TO AVOID COWS ' (.Special to “Times") HASTINGS, Jan. 30. A wet, slippery road and a herd of cows wandering through a gate on to the main road half-way between Hast..ngs and PakipakL wero responsible for cho overturning of a largo sedan car at 5.30 last evening. Tho driver was apparently travelling at a smart pace, and as tho gate through which tho cows were moving was in a dip ho did not notice them until almost on top of them. He applied his brakes, and tho car skidded across to tho left bank, swung right round facing the opposite* way, and capsized. Tho driver escaped uninjured and tho only damage to tho car was a broken window. TWO CARS IN COLLISION Slight injuries were suffered t>y a man named Ainsley, when a car in which he was a passenger was struck by another car on tho Fernhill road, lear the Hastings Hospital, last night about 7 o’clock. Both cars received •slight damage. The car in which Mr. Ainsley was a passenger was being driven by Mr. Wallace Skrimpton, of Matapiro, and was procecdipg past tho hospital, when Mr. Shrimpton saw a lorry approaching him. He put out his hand for tho lorry to stop as ho wished to speak to the Iriver and also signalled his intention to stop. Mr. P. D. Parker, of Rissington, who was following Mr. Shrimpton’s car, apparently failed to notice that the first car was drawing up, and crashed into tho back of it.
Mr. Ainsley received a cut on the head from broken glass, but, after receiving medical attention at the hospital, ho was allowed to proceed.
