Hedge Fire Causes Excitement
AT NORSEWOOD TOWNSHIP. DANNEVIRKE, Jan. 27. Last night, shortly after nine o ’clock, considerable excitement prevailed in the township of Norseweed when it was discovered that the big hedge, about 20 feet high, in front of the schoolhouse, was on fire. The hedge, which is a very thick one, in the centre of which a considerable amount of dry pine needles and twigs had accumulated, was soon a roaring furnace, showers of sparks and flames shooting to a great height. Fortunately there was an entire absence of wind, and with the aid of an energetic bucket brigade the fire was finally
checked, after travelling about 40 feet along the hedge. A reception after the Stnbbs-Hansard wedding was in progress in the Town Hall, and consequently a large number of cars were parked close to the hedge. These were hurriedly removed to safety. Had there been a stiff wind blowing the school house and also tho school, would have been in immediate danger.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but it was probably due to some careless verson dropping a match.
