Apiti
From Our Uvv.. forresnondent. The Apiti Tennis Club called a general meeting on Wednesday evening last, but owing to the very small attendance the meeting, which was to have been for the purpose of discussing the raising of funds for the improvement of the tennis courts and surroundings, was not held. The club has this year quite a good membership, but for any club to be successful, menu* I bers need to take more interest than merely being financial members. The recent prolonged spell or showery weather has, of course, been tho cause of so little I tennis being played, but in the interests of the game it is hoped that when the weather improves, the members will show more interest in the club and its affairs. One court is to be topdressed and the grass is to be trimmed up and the grounds tidied as soon as possible. The, committee has been considering the possibility of having two courts remade before next season and for this purpose will need the co-operation of all playing members as well as those interested in this pleasant and health-giving sport. The Haythorne Cup match on Saturday next is to be played between the Kangiwabia and Apiti Tennis Club teams. Dance. The Apiti Tennis Club Dance on Anniversary night, al iic-igh a hastil/ airanged function, proved to be a vc*iy successful one and attracted a good attendance of dancers from various parts of the district. Mr Cyr.l Osom-ne, the Tennis Club president, was M.C., and the club captain, Mr Dan K-irne;*. was i • • door-keeper. Messrs Jack Hansen (Pian.>) and Robin Prince (saxophone) provided bright music and tho committee were responsible for the serving of supper. Apiti SjSorts Club. Messrs C. H. Osborne, T. YV. Pratt and B. Kearney met on Thursday evening to revise the programme for the Apiti Athletic Sports Club meeting to be held on March 3. Mr Dan Kearney has donated a gold medal for the runner scoring the most points. Mr R. V. Stewart has donated £1 Is for the first prize for "tilting the ring on horseback.” The Feilding Pipe Band is to be m attendance at the sports, and this announcement should prove popular as there ax-e many in this district who have in common with the Duke of Windsor an appreciation of and liking for the stii*ring strains of the bagpipes. The catering arrangements will be finalised later. The sports night'dance, for which Larkin’s Orchestra has been engaged, will be a happy wind-up to the day’s sport.
