Te Arakura
From Our Own Correspondent. Tennis On Saturday, January 16, a team from Te Aralcura-Tennis Club journeyed to Taonui for a match, beating tnat club by 11 sets to three. Te Arakura players were Messrs B. H. Haythorne, D. T. Johnston, D. Lewer and J. Sorensen, Mesdaines D. T. Johnston, and B. H. Haythorne, Misses Hazel and Joyce Bennett. On Saturday last a team consisting of Messrs J. Sorensen, K. Thomas, E. H. Haythorne, Misses H. and J. Bennett, and N. Hume played against Bunnythorpe at. that place. Te Arakura proved the winners by 11 sets to six. Valedictory A gift evening was tendered to Miss Molly Firth on Saturday evening in honour of her approaching marriage. The hall was prettily decorated with pink dahlias, tamarisk and perennial phlox. A very large number of local residents and also many friends from Feilding and Palmerston North, spent a very happy evening. Games, dancing and competitions were carried on till midnight when all reluctantly dispersed. Music tor dancing and games was contributed by Mrs D. T. Johnston, Miss Hazel Bennett, Messrs D. Lewer, R. Sullivan and P. Collins. In a short speech, Mr J. J. Hume said Miss Firth would be very much missed from their midst and would have the good wishes of many friends in her new home. Mr Hume also expressed the sympathy ox residents with Mr and Mrs Firth and laniily in tne serious loss they had sustained in the recent fire. Mr Hume then called on Miss Firth to accept the large number of parcels and tiny Dorothy Kendrick presented a lovely basket of pansies. The opening of the parcels and tho reading or messages caused much fun, the beautiful assortment of household articles being later viewed with admiration. On behalf of Miss Firth, Mr Frank Page thanked the donors of the gifts for their warm welcome. The evening closed with the singing of "Auld Lung Syne." Personal and General. Mrs F. O’Farrell, together with her sisters, Miss Maegillicuddy and Mrs D. Rutherford , is away on a motoring and camping tour. Mr and Mrs D. Salter have returned from Foxton Beach and are staying with Mr and Mrs J. H. Bennett. Miss Thelma Lewer was home from Wellington for Anniversary week-end. Mrs D. Lewer, who has been spending the week with her parents. Mr and Mrs Pepper, Petone, returned home on SunAirs G. Firth and Misses Molly and Audrey Firth, are staying with Mr J. Wratt and Miss Wratt, Denbigh street, Feilding. Miss aI. Calder was a visitor to Mr and Mrs B. H. Haythorne for Anniversary week-end. Mr Jolm Hodges has left the district to join Mr Athol Quarrie at Hunterville. Miss Freda Jonansen, Palmerston North, and Miss Ngaire Klink, Pohangina, are staying with Mr and Mrs P. Pedersen, Milson’s Line. Mr A. YVealleans, Pohangina, was the guest of Mr and Mrs E. H. Haythorne for the week-end. Miss Joan Howe, Palmerston North, who has been staying with Miss M. E. Hansen, returned home on Sunday. On Thursday a quantity of hay was put in, in quite good order and some ventured to cut. Much, hay is still standing and a recent visitor remarked at the number or unshorn sheep he bad seen while travelling through. The wet morning cn Anniversary Dayno doubt spoilt many plans. Nevertheless, many parties motored to nearby beaches
