Youth Raids Campers’ Tents
SERIES OF THEFTS ADMITTED Eight charges of theft and two of coaverting motor-cycles to his own use, were admitted in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday by George Alexander Scott, a slaughterman, aged IS years. One motor-cycle was the property of Alfred T. Shirley, and valued at £125, and the other tho property ot Roy E. Eichlcr, and valued at £3O. The details of the thefts were as follow: Pair of boots valued at 22/6, the property of tho National Mortgage and Agency Company; butcher’s knife, valued at 4/6, the property of some person unknown; pair of shoes valued at 10/tho property of J. W. Hooper; leather overcoat valued at £G 15s, the property of W. Baker; camera valued at 14/6, tli property of Marjorie Rhodes; camera valued at £2, the property of W. .Sword; | suitcase, cardigan, razor and strop, all valued at £G 17s Gd, the property of W. H. Gould; 3 shirts, 2 polo jerseys, suit case, trousers, ties, razor, wallet and motor-driver’s license, ail valued at £-S Ss 3d, the property of A. Bouzaid anil others. Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre intimated that accused had a “list” and his con duct had been generally satisfactory while under supervision. Constable Chapman, in evidence, said accused was the eldest of six children. 1 with mother dead and father remarried. Scott had been frank about the thefts with tho exception of those at the camp ing ground. 110 had gone through the tents on New Year’s Eve while the occupants were away. Accused had been sent to Wcraroa Training Farm as punishment for thefts on a previous occasion, but was not now a ward of the State. Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre stated that Seott had ridden Eichler’s motor-cycle to Hunterville, where it had brokendown. Shirley’s motor-cycle had been taken from the Showgrounds when the speedway was on. Scott had gone to Wellington and back on it aud on bis return to tho Longburn Freezing Works where ho was employed, he had housed it secretly. Scott had endeavoured to alter the appearance of both machines. When arrested, articles reported stolen had been discovered in his possession. These articles had been taken from tents at the camping ground at the Esplanade which Seott had visited at night, ransacking the unoccupied tents under cover of darkness. Other articles ' had been stolen from the freezing works | where Scott had been employed as a butcher. He had proved himself a good 1 worker but reports were that he was more or less an irresponsible. Nevertheless, some of the thefts had been committed with cool daring. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., remanded ac- ; cased to to-day in order that he might have time to consider what he should do with him. His Worship remarked that Scott had had a chance before.
