Central King Country Cream Supplies
RATIONALISATION PROPOSAL NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 18. The first step toward tho reorganisation and rationalisation of cream supplies in the central King Country, comprising Oliura, Kaitieke and Taumarunui countries, has been taken as the result of an examination of tho position by tho Executive Commission of Agriculture. Special meetings of shareholders of the Ohura Valley and Kaitieke Co-operative dairy companies will be held to consider the reorganisation proposal.
The problem of zoning cream supplies in tho central King Country with, tho object of promoting greater economy and efficiency in the collection of cream and its manufacture has been engaging the attention of the Executive Commission and of thoso prominently interested in the industry in tho districts concerned for some time. The dairy suppliers of tho district have had threo choices for the manufacture of their dairy produce. The district, because of its former lack of roading facilities, is essentially a home separation area aDd three companies wero operating—tho Kaitieke Co-operative Dairy Company at Piriaka, tho Ohura Valley Dairy Company at Matiere, and the Waikato Valley Dairy Company at Hamilton. The cream was collected by lorries and carted direct to either of the co-opera-tive dairy factories or to the nearest railway station, whence it was railed to ono of tho three factories. Under the present system cream was being railed past tho nearest factory. Ohura being perhaps the greatest sufferer in this respect.
As an outcome of the investigation by the Executive Commission special meetings of shareholders of tho Ohura Valley and Kaitieke Co-operativ© Companies will be held next Saturday at Matiero and Taumarunui to consider and if approved to carry the special motions necessary to give effect to tho proposed measures of reorganisation. The proposal provides for buying the interests of the Waikato Valley Dairy Company in the district by taking over its supply, which is estimated at about 400 tons of butter, and paying that company £5 a ton. The two co-opera-tive companies will go into liquidation, and will form a new company. The two factories at Piriaka and Matiere will be retained, and each will manufacture cream collected in its own area.
