SEARCH FOR SYNTHETIC. “Discovering a substitute for gasoline is the most vital problem for the application' of chemistry to the future,’’ is the report of a research chemist to the American Chemical Society. . This report disclosed the result of investigations showing that the weight of gasoline going into automotive industry is more than 5i times the weight of its nearest competitors—iron and steel. While there is no immediate prospect of a serious gasoline shortage, the petroleum resources of the world are not inexhaustible, and ultimately some other fuel will be needed to supplement or replace petrol.
