POLICE COURT.

Thursday, March 19th, 1879. (Before Ot. M. Snelson, Esq., Mayor.) SHOOTING AT GAME. Charles Wildbore, a youth about seventeen years of age, was charged by Constable Gillespie, at the instance of the Acclimatisation Society, with having, on the 4th instant, shot at and hunted native game. _, Mr. P. E. Warburton, Hon. Secretary of the Acclimatisation Society, gave evidence , that he heard one or two shots fired from a gun on the day m question, and upon looking around saw the accused, with a gun m his hand, riding on horseback. Witness asked the accused what he had been shooting at, and he stated wild duck. The season was not yet declared opeu. The Acclimatisation Society did not wish for a heavy penalty, as the accused had made no attempt at concealment, and had not any game m his possession when witness met him. The present case was brought more as a warning to others, as the Society had been informed that the G-ame Laws were being constantly infringed upon. His Worship said the accused had laid himself open to the heavy penalty of £20 ; but as he had made no attempt at concealment, and had not any game m his possession, the Bench would only inflict a fine of os., and 9s. costs. BREACH OP BOROTTGH BYE-LAWS-Francis Haynes and Albert Carr were charged with plying for hire with a cart, without being duly licensed. Mr. Keeling, Town Clerk, stated that Haynes had taken out a license since tho summons had been issued. Fined 2s. 6d. and 9s. costs m each case, aud Carr was ordered to take out a license immmediately. A similar charge was pending against Thomas G-oodisson, but Constable Gillespie said that the summons had not been served, as Goodisson was stated to be lying ill m bed. HORSE- STEALING. Constable G-illespie asked that Alfred Luxford, charged with horse-stealing at Turakina, might; be remanded to Wanganui. The Court then adjourned.
