. Tuesday. Mr G. M; Reed, editor af the Guardian, has laid, a criminal information against R. A. Sherrin for an alleged libel contained m a letter signed "Auckland" and published m the Waimate Tribune of the 14th inst. As Sherrin was about to leave, he was this morning -arrested. The libel is a very coarse one, and Reed is determined to push the riiatter to the uttermost. • .-. ■'*••■■". Mr Mansford, R:M., gave judgement this morning m the Pearson v." Fever Hospital case. The first event was the H.urdie Race of '80 soys, 2 miles and a distance.' Eclipse was scratched. Kildare was the favorite, and won, after a splendid race with Banjo who was second. Zetland was a bad third. Time— 4mins. 45|rsees. Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap ; 200 soys ; If miles. All were scratched except Piingawerewere, Guy Fawkes, Teinpleton and Cloth of Gold. Pungawerewere went off with the lead; with Guy Fawkes close up. Cloth of Gold came well to the front at the end, of the mile but soon fell back.' • Templeton pulled up well towards the finish, but could not catch Guy, who m the meantime had disposed of Pungawerewefe. Result— Giiy Fawkes Ist, Templeton 2nd, Cloth of Gold 3rd, Pungawerewere last. Time — 3mins. 23Jsecs. Lateb. For the Derby, 1^ miles, Puriri was Ist, Danebury 2nd, and Hippbcamus: '3rd. Betting— 6o to 40 on the field, Hippocamus being the favorite; At the end of the half mile Dead Heat had a strong lead, Puriri second^ Danebury, third. . Puriri soon after passed Dead Heat and when the mile was completed was : leading 'several' lengths. Danebury was second at tlie jdistance post but could, not get ': within: >two; lengths of the winner. ' Hippocamus was a bad third. Time^ — 2mins. 535secs. Novel Race; ipo . soys; If miles ; ' Haphazard Ist, Flying Beauty 2nd, Merry Bird . 3rd. Six others w^re scratched. Haphazard won easily. Time — 2mins. 25isecs. The Hack Race of 20 soys was won by Kathleen.
