January 6. Sir Donald McLean had been for some -few days before Iris death, so ill that recoveiv was considered out of tho question; but by request of the family the local journals abstained from saying anything about it, as he was m the habit of looking . at -newspapers, a*hd anything said m them about his illness was a source of vexation to him.: On. Sunday his life was quite despaired of. He rallied, however, considerably, and to a. very early hour yesterday it was thought possible that the acute attack of his disease might pass over f oy > time; but about five m the morning the attack took a sudden turn for the worse, and at nine another turn^ which rendered all hopeful anticipations vain from that time to ten minutes to four m the afternoon, when he died. He was almost unconscious. Now and then he muttered some words' in Gaelic, of tenor showing that the mind was occupied with thoughts suitable 4o the. imminence of his entrance into a future state. He could recognise faces, but his brain could scarcely be said to be at work. His death has created a profound sensation here among all classes. The funeral takes place to-morrow at three o'clock. Both the Masonic bodieß,.will meet at two o'clock, and 'then jyroeed m procession to the funeral. TneTVictona Lodge will take the precedence,, because of Sir Donald, havihg^been Grand Master of the English ijugdtution. The Masons regret thatTtfie regalia lately arrived from Englandis all m Wellington. The. Artillery corps will attend, and the funeral; will have something of a military character.
