- January 4. Rodolph Lawrentj a youth of seventeen, for a criminal assault on a little girl, was sentenced this morning at the Supreme Court to eight years'imprisonment and twenty lashes. The Agent-General, under date of December 27, telegraphs the despatch of the following shipments of emigrants : —Oxford, 239, for Auckland ; Feraglen, 254, for Napier ; Northampton, 334, for Westland and Wellington. '">-.' Mr Broomhall has arrived overland, from Napier anS Tauranga. The letter from Auckland Waste Lands Board only reached him at Crofton, while inspecting operations at Feilding Block*. It is understood that he agrees to the resolutions of the Board as to the purchase, deposit, and cultivation of onefifth of the block m five years. Owing to the serious indisposition of Lady Normanby, His Excellency's intended visit to the South has beenindefinitely postponed. The first meeting of a large number of the County Councils was held to-day at noon. In the majority of instances the business was purely formal,. such as the election of Chairman and Secretary. McLean will be the delegate at the cable conference to be held at Sydney next month. Jj|jjftKiderstood that the Governn^Hj^Bb averse to any large expeiwßH^^ff behalf of a second cable, and will de? cline to commit the colony to any outlay until Parliament has an opportunity of expressing its will. Tuesday. The Armed Constabulary and police forces throughout the colony are to be amalgamated, so far as to enable Go? vernment to use the police, of both islands with the constabulary m case of emergency. By this arrangement Go? vernment can reduce -the constabulary by 13 officers and 200 men, and this reduction is being made as rapidly as possible. The whole question of the administration of this combined force, and appointment of superior officers* is stilL under the consideration of Government. The contract for the Wellington street tramway has been sigoed. The locomotives, carriages, and rails wiH be ordered from England. The work will begin today.
