Presenting the annual report and bal-ancc-shcet for ibp season ended August? 31, 1940, the ■ committee of-. the-. Palmerston ; North. Lawn Ten ills Club records ■ the following; membership: Active, 106 (129); .; country, 9 (18); junior, 27 (21); honorary, . 49 (69); life, 17. The annual open tournament was held in conjunction with the . twelfth annual tournament of ..the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association when the , various titles were won as follow: Aten’s singles, R. Howe; women’s singles, AT’bS. At. Beverley: men's doubles, D. -Livingston and J. Itoach; women’s doubles, Misses N. and At. Beverley;, mixed doubles, W. Boddy and Aliss At. Beverley; boys’ singles, R. Mackenzie; girls’ singles, Aliss N. Huso. From the point ot view of weather the season was the most disappointing thp club lias had for many years, and duo primarily to the succession of wot Saturdays in late January and February the Manawalu Association’s intcr-elub competitions were abandoned. Club championship. winners were: Aten’s singles, I. C. Sliecrin; women’s singles, Mrs V. Hobin; men’s doubles, L. Chapman, G. F. Glaister; women’s doubles, Atcsdamcs V. Hobin and G. IT. New; mixed doubles, All- and Airs V. Hobin. The “-xcees ot income over expenditure for tl.e year was £l7 ■ 17s 3d, but this amount lias been written off as depreciation against plant and equipment. Unfortunately, there was a further falling off in subscriptions, but the financial position has been assisted substantially by profits from the open tournament £54 11s lOd), dances, rent of ball, etc. (£25 8s lid) a hamper competition (£22 6? 3d). During the year replacements of plant to the approximate value of £ls have been made and an electric pick-up purchased at a cost- of-,-£l3. All of those items have been written off in the accounts for the year. As we are obliged to make a reduction of our mortgage of £2O ' per annum it. should be noted that a surplus of this amount at least is required to maintain otir- present cash position. During’-the scasoa the courts were once more made -available to pupils of the local High Schools at a nominal fee and in this connection the committee ha 3 again to thank Mr J. T. McDonald for the excellent work done by him in coaching the junior girls. After thanking all who gave assistance in the past , season the report concludes; We would refer to the loss the club lias sustained from the enlistment of members for active service, among them being Air W. S. Fox (former secretary), and Alessrs C. K. Reid and H. Latta (members of the committee). We a'rc faced with the loss of further members for active service as the war continues and the period ahead must necessarily be a most difficult one for the club. The" committee therefore appeals to all members for their continued co-operation and help.. . ..." ,
