HOME GUARD.

The committee of district and otk J presentatives responsible for prehmin. . steps towards bringing the Home into being in the Dannevirko district has defined Dannevirkc Borough, Bamievirk. Gounty, and Weber County as the Home Guard area for that district. It is pro viding for an initial enrolment ot ouu members, and lias accepted the Danncvirkc R.S.A.’s offer to enrol and organise the Home Guard in the district under the committee’s authority. Speaking at the R.S.A. reunion at Dannevirko, Major-General R. loung, G. 8., CMC. D. 5.0., Officer Commanding the Homo Guard, said that the guard would be the Dominion's second line of defence in the event of attack. If an emergency arose, and it became necessary to evacuate the cities, the men of . the Home Guard who had seen service in the last war wou lo stand fast and prevent any panic. •* , is a country we can defend, he acluccl, “but we must have organisation. I lie Home Guard must ceaselessly watch the coastline to guard against a surprise attack. It an enemy should come in a cruiser or ail aeroplane-carrier, on a hit-and-run raid, it would bei the task cf the Home Guard to hold that enemy until the territorial Forces could take' over.” 110 believed that if tilc Home Guard was organised on- the right lines, the young men in the territorials would know that they had the returned men —trained and experienced men in war —behind them. General Young was convinced that he had the backing of all sections of the 'community in' the organisation of the Home Guard. If he cou.d give them something useful to do m the defence of their country, then lie felt that ho had achieved something.
