DAUGHTERS’ DAY
Yesterday was daughters’ day at the Palmerston North Rotary Club when Miss Valerio Oram, who 'has recently returned from an extended visit to England, addressed the gathering on her many experiences during her travels. In the course of her address Miss Oram described the English countryside as seen on a motor-tour, and the war preparations undertaken in the cities. Miss Oram stated that before she ieft England the large parks had been disfigured by trenches and many of the buildings in the large cities were barricaded with sandbags, while large heaps of sand wjere to be seen in the streets. In describing the rationing of food, she stated that when the children went to school they always took a small ration, in case of emergency. Miss Oram concluded by describing her trip back to New Zealand in a large liner which was one of a hundred ships in a convoy when it first left England. Mr B. J. Jacobs proposed a vote of thanks to the sneaker which was carried by acclamation.
