OROUA COUNTY
COUNCIL BUSINESS. At the monthly meeting of the Oroua County Council, yesterday, the chairman (Cr. A. Campbell) presided, and also present were Crs. A. 15. Shannon, VV. L. McLennan, It. Stewart and T. Green.
Dealing with circulars concerning the rural housing scheme, i.n regard to which anomalies were pointed out, it I was stated that in the event of a fire I occurring in a building erected under the scheme the amount of insurance cover would have to bo employed in rebuilding or in reduction of the loan. The Counties’ Association suggested amended legislation that in respect of Crown owned properties the loans should be State guaranteed. Regarding a circular /rom the town clerk, Wellington, concerning waste metals, it was decided that the individual farmers could arrange to deliver such materials to the depots which would no doubt be established in the various boroughs. It was stated that there were few materials on the farms suitable for inclusion in the j collection required bv the Government j for military purposes. The chairman j added that when the Government wanted old iron the farmers would be able to supply it in large quantities. A letter was received from Mr M. P. Wilkin, of Ashhurst, referring to floodtrig of his' property. The position was stated to bo that the road had been raised and now the water had to go through the culvert which had been overtaxed previously, whereas previously the excess water passed over the road to get away quickly. The Public Works Department disclaimed responsibility for the flooding on Mr Wilkin’s property through the water backing up. The chairman felt that the department should assist in anv work undertaken to relieve the position. After all, the department had accentuated the trouble by raising the road level. The permission of other property owners would have to be secured before anything was done. It was stated that the creek from which the flooding arose had been cleaned out periodically bv the council. It was decided to write to the property owners concerned asking if they are prepared to straighten the creek and also to write to the Public Works Department asking that assistance be given to the council in the ev*ent of the latter undertaking the work. A letter was received from the Min- 1 ister of National Service dealing with) the formation of the Emergency Re-, serve Corps. The chairman stated that ho had attended at a meeting held in I Palmereton North yesterday and had j practically committed the council to, give its wholehearted support to the proposals of the Government to establish a comprehensive Home Guard service. There would probably be a meeting held shortly and a committee representative of the district local bodies would bo set up. Tin's committee would co-opt the services of the R.S.A. It was resolved that Cr. Campbell represent the council on the Agricultural High School Board of Managers. The Ashhurst Cemetery Board wrote thanking the council for improving the road leading into the cemetery at Ashhurst.'
