BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Feilding Borough Council met last evening. | The Plunket Society thanked the council tor a grant made to the funds, i The borough engineer was instructed to set back the Aorangi-liobsou Street corner to provide better visibility in regard to the railway crossing. It was stated that the new machinery ; for the crusher plant is expected to arI rive within a few clays. ! A-Ir R, W. 11. Wood reported that 1422 books which were dilapidated had _ been ! removed from the library shelves. During the past month tHc number of subscribers totalled 225 and 2034 books had , been changed. i Another dwelling has oeen found for the tenant in the Centennial Park a® l ' tage and as a result the latter will be j ready for demolition when required by the council to enable the extension of the cricket ground to be undertaken. Air A. Marsden has been appointed caretaker of the abattoir. Air R. E. Ilepworth (abattoir manager) reported that during August. the following slock were handled at the abattoir: Cows 25, oxen 37, heifers 58, wethers 385, lambs 32, pigs 90, vealers 1 bobby calves 3094. Fee samounted to £166 bs 7d, an increase of £47 19s 8d compared with August, 1939. In the extended district the killings totalled 548 sheep, 309 - lambs, 85 pigs, and 30 cattle, the fees collected. being £34 Is 6d. * _ , In his report, Air Hay stated that 15 chains of the now footpath work in West Street had been completed. The pressure in the water mains had been maintained and the levels at the reservoirs were high. The .recommendation of the abattoir committee that the killing pen be reconstructed and the width of the race leading to the pen reduced was approved. A further reconnnendation that an electric hoist be installed was held over till next financial year. It was stated that the cost of modernising the abattoir at the present lime was an immediate check to such ail undertaking. The' installation of further windows in the' library was approved, and it was resolved that the officer in charge of the Country Library Service in Wellington Be thanked for the assistance given to Air Wood during his stay in Wellington recently. A recommendation that the council takeover control of the Alunicipal Band Hal) grounds and maintain them when they have been put in order was opposed bv- Cr Smith, who said the council was leading itself up with responsibilities in connection with the mowing of grass plots in the borough and was unable to find the money for necessary general expenditure. It was decided that when the band authorities have put their grounds in order the council will reconsider the question of maintaining them.
