BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Woodville Brough Council was held last evening, when there were present the Alayor (AJr R. R. Johnston), and Crs C. Forbes, A. H. Hustwick, A. Olsson, E. J. Harding, J. Sullivan, *J. T. Horne, and IL Galbraith. The Hawke’s Bay- Employers’ Association wrote in connection with the 5 per cent, increase in award wages the basic wage of £4 13s 4d thereby being raised to £4 18s. The General Labourers’ Union having offered to conclude an agreement for two years on that basis, the association desired to have the council’s opinion on this and also on the union’s claim for an extra holiday. The Alayor considered that employees not covered by an award should, in fairness receive the increase, and this was agreed to by the council. On the matter of the extra holiday, the Alayor was opposed to it and moved accordingly. This was seconded by Cr Galbraith and carried unanimously. The Commissioner of Transport enclosed a copy of an Order-in-Couneil and an interpretation of this dealing with the limitation of sounding motor-horns at night, loaded firearms in motor vehicles, passing on marked corners, and speed of trailers.
Arising from correspondence from the Alinister of National Service (Hon. It. Semitic) and also from the Woodville county clerk (Air J. M. Graham), the Alayor gave the council a resume of proceedings at the conference of local bodies relating to the Horne Guard, hold at Napier last month, and of a subsequent interview between the Borough Council representatives and the County Council. The County Council had appointed a committee to' lake joint action with the borough committee in the matter of obtaining further information before taking action as set out in the Alinister’s circular. Both bodies had agreed that rifles should be issued. Cr Forbes gave an outline of steps that, had been taken to form a rifle club, and of correspondence frnfn the defence authorities in that connection. Ho considered that the Home Guard and _ rifle clubs, should work together. Crs Forbes, Horn. Olsson and the . town clerk were appointed the council’s representatives ro work with the committee appointed by the County Council. .
