AUCKLAND GOLF TITLE.

QUALIFYING ROUNDS

Two visitors, Miss N. Smillio (Palmerston North) and Mrs K. Dyke (Nelson), led the field in the qualifying play of the Auckland ladies’ provincial golf championship at Titirangi on Tuesday. This was not unexpected, as Miss Smillie showed form consistent with her handicap of C in a visit to Auckland earlier in the year, while Mrs Dyke, on 2, is one of the lowest handicapped players in the Dominion and a New Zealand representative in the Tasman Cup contest of 1937. The scoring was rather disappointing and not one of the field played to her handicap during the day. In the afternoon, when .the . wind freshened and there was some rain, the best net score of the seniors was three strokes worse than the standard.

Miss Smillie owed her place at t'he head of the field to her consistency, her rounds of 83 and 84 giving her a lead of one over Mrs Dyke, who carded an 86 in tile morning and improved to an 82 in the afternoon. Miss Smillie made a good start in the afternoon with two fours, but then put her tee shot out of hounds and took a 7. Her halves were 42 and 41.

Following were the results : Provincial Championship.—Miss N. Smillie (Manawatu). 83 —84—167 ; Mrs K. Dyke (Nelson), 86—82—168; Mrs J. M. Alison (Titirangi), 85—85—170; Mrs P.
