NOXIOUS WEEDS PEST.

COUNCILLORS CONCERNED. Concern at the spread of noxious weeds in certain parts of the county was expressed by members at a meeting of the Kairanga County, Council to-day. Cr W. G. Shannon stated that where the Ivahuterawa stream entered the Manawatu River the gorse was 12tt high and was a disgrace to the district.

Cr J. Batchelar expressed the hope that the noxious weeds inspector would take firm action against offenders, and Mr D. Collis mentioned t'hat if the spread of gorse in certain areas were allowed to continue the land would become useless. Cr Shannon : It could be cleared tip with subsidised labour. Something should also be done about the blackberry infesting the countryside, j’, “It seems to me the Agricultural Department has done nothing over the matter,” said Cr M. W. Voss. “It has done nothin" to follow up warnings given to settlers.” . Cr T. D. Lynch considered the settlers were just as keen as the council to control the weeds if They could secure labour. 1

Reference was made to bad patches of blackberry growing along Newbury Line.

The ..chairman (Cr W. R. Hopcroft) undertook to visit the affected localities and draw the attention of the noxious weeds inspector to them.
