MILK DISTRIBUTION.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Your correspondent W. C. Cantlon has stated that the recent deputation to the City Council was misrepresented by the Press report.- He also states that whatever system the Government or council may introduce it must not interfere with the L.R.C. objective, i.e., socialisation of the milk supply. If Mr Cantlon will inquire from the Christchurch L.R.C. he will find that the Christchurch City Council (a Labour Cuuncil; i decided to send a select committee to/ Wellington to investigate its municipal milk scheme. When its report was tabled, one council decided that the citizens were better served by private enterprise. Have our local L.R.C. members any idea of the cost of a municipal milk station? I do not believe they have. It seems that the only disgruntled consumers are the L.R.C. No one else seems to complain. Mr Cantlon refers to 11 or 12 vendots in one street); he is not definite. I would respectfully request him to get into the trade and become a 4.30 a.m. all weather man, and then he would find out the difference between it and the trade he follows, or better still canvass all disgruntled consumers for shares in a co-operative milk round.- There is his chance to add to his co-operative ideas. He will find too there is much toil and no 40-hour week as a milkman. All this “bell ivether” talk about municipal milk will be pretty expensive to the ratepayer and milk consumers if they swallow it. —I am, etc., FRESH MILK. 11-6-40.
