FOXTON HARBOUR.
IMPROVEMENTS AT BEACH. BOARD MEETING. The Foxton Harbour Board met inPalmerston North to-day, when there were present Messrs J. Linklatcr (chairman), M. E. Perreau, W. E. Oarthew, E. J. Bowater, H. Osborne and J. A. Nash. Mr Perreau,. who is chairman of the Foxton Beach Improvement Society, reported that the amount forthcoming from the Manawatu Automobile Association for improvements to the amenities at the beach would probably be fairly substantial. The association was keen to assist, but it was too early yet for it to say what amount it would provide. The chairman said thanks were due to Mr Perreau for his interest in this matter. The amenities referred to were very necessary at the beach, and the board should help in every way. The Social Security Department wrote concerning the men employed under scheme No. 13 at Foxton Beach. The letter said that a complaint had been received that the men were engaged at work on private property, also that one of the men was acting as pilot’s assistant and that both had been used at times for work on beacons. Unless the men were employed only on work authorised, the employing authority could not be given ’a subsidy.—Mr Perreau said' that nothing had been done on private pro„perty which was not justified. The only case of this being done was when sand had .been blown on to private property. The other work complained of was being carried out at the expense of the board. The secretary (Mr 11. Rangiheuea) reported that he had replied saying that the complaints would be investigated. The pilot (Mr J. Bald) said that there were three arrivals and two departures during the month. On May 10 and 11 the river was in flood and washed away part of the banks at one or two points. Two sets of beacons were washed out by the flood, but had, been recovered and were in place again. Several applications were received for the position of pilot, made vacant by the resignation of Mr Bald at the last meeting. These wero held over in the meantime. The working account showed that income for May • amounted to £47 3s 7d, and there was a credit balance-of £ll 11s 7d over the expenditure.
