WOODVILLE & DISTRICT

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The first monthly meeting of the newly-elected Woodvillc District High School Committee was held oil Thursday evening. The chairman (Mr R. R. Johnston) ' presided and there were also present Messrs T. Smith, E. J. Harding, AM. Pickering, H. J. McPeak, R. Peebles and L. J. Whittington (secretary). Leave of absence was granted Mr J. J. Young and Rev. B. P.- Williams. The balance-sheet of the recent school ball showed a profit of £ls Os Bd. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs E. J. Harding and the ladies who had assisted her with the supper arrangements and also Mr S. Turnbull. The report of the headmaster (Mr J. S. Mcßean) gave the following particulars of attendance. —Primary : Roll, 257 (130 boys and 127 girls): average attendance, 239 (120 boys and 119 girls). Secondary roll 35 (15 hoys and 20 girls). Sickness had affected the attendance to a slight extent. Some of this was of an infections nature and necessitated the pupils staying away from school for a fortnight, and contacts in the same home three weeks. Mr Lyons had relinquished his position as relieving teacher in the High School at the end of last term. Miss Lindsay had taken up her position in the secondary department and Miss Peters in charge of Standard 1. Miss Nelson was acting as supernumerary on the staff. The headmaster urged that a plumber be engaged to fix up the hot.water svstem in the High School. One of the classes w-as at present using the science room two mornings a week and without heating arrangements the room was very cold.—The report was adopted, the committee deciding to attend to proper heating of the science room. It was decided to increase the salary of the caretaker (Mr P. Anslow) by £9 10s per annum. The headmaster was authorised to obtain footballs and basketballs required. Messrs J. and R. Peebles and E. J. Harding were thanked for their assistance to the committee in obtaining supplies of firewood.
