SCHOOL BUILDINGS

ARCHITECT’S REPORT. Reporting to the meeting of the Wanganui Education Board, yesterday, the architect (Air E. 11. Hodge) outlined the progress of work on school buildings. The report stated: Works completed.—Foxton: The whole of the work in connection with the ei'ection of a dental clinic has been completed and the chief dental officer has commented very favourably on the building. Whakarongo: General repairs and top-dressing of the asphalt surrounding the school building have been done. Foxton: Minor repairs have been effected to-the school building. Raumai: Screens have been made for the covering of the windows facing the playground and have been forwarded to the committee for fixing. Central School baths: The plaster work of the interior walls of the reconstructed swimming pool has been carried out and the hath is again ready for use. Russell Street: The laying of the drain and evening of the depressions of the newly acquired area has been completed by the contractor.

Works in hand.—Foxton : Renovations to the teacher’s residence have been arranged by the acceptance of- a quotation of £2B 12s Gd. A! art on: Arrangements arc in hand for improvements to the drains from the brick building. Girls’ High School, Palmerston North: Tenders have been received for the erection of .additions to the school building and it is hoped that the early acceptance of one of these will enable this work to be proceeded with almost, immediately. Roys’ High'School, Palmerston North: Plans and specifications have been prepared and tenders are to be called lor the fixing of fire escapes to the hostel building. West End: Plans and specifications are to bo put immediately in hand, and quotations will bo invited, for the installation of a central hot water heating system.

Inter alia, the chairman’s report stated: “Members will bo glad to know that the recent alteration in the board’s system of applying for grants for new buildings, etc., has borne good fruit, grants for the following works having been received: Halcombe (new school), Alangatepopo (materials other than timber), Owhakura (extension and remodelling), Taihapc District High (new residence), Watershed Road (site and school), West End (Central heating), Whakarongo (septic tank).
