ASHHURST.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, May 13. At (ho annual meeting of the Ashhurst Domain and Cemetery Board those present were Messrs M. P. Wilkin (chairman), F. A. Dunstall, R. A. Davis and W. N. Brower (secretary). An apology was received from Mr J. A. McDonoTl, who was unable to be present owing to sickness. The Domain receipts for the past quarter were £l7 and the expenditure, £45. The annual balance sheet was presented and adopted. It showed receipts £7O and expenditure £BS, and the credit balance in the bank was £177 8s 7d. Mr Wilkin was re-elected Chairman and Mr Brewer secretary. The Domain report stated, inter alia: “No damage has been caused by wind and the bush is in good condition. Tile Domain appears to be becoming more popular judging ■by the number' of visitois. Fourteen picnics were held. Mr Harper has cut approximately twelve acres of lupin and broom on the lower Domain. As seedlings have grown rapidly this will require a lot of attention yet to rid the land of the lupin. Permission from the Lands Department has been received to erect a boundary fence approximately 40 chains in length; a contract has been let for its erection. With the work in hand the funds will be sorely taxed in the near future.” The Cemetery Board report stated: There have been 11 interments and 16 plots. Total interments to March 31, 1940, arc 350. Figures for the year show: Receipts, £67; expenditure, £4O. The credit balance in the bank is £2lO. At a. meeting of the Hall Social Committee Mr Woodroofe presided. The financial statement of the functions held over the past nine months reveal d a credit of £44 which was handed over to the Hall Committee for the hall lining fund. On behalf of the Hall Committee and the Social Committee, Mr Woodroof. expressed thanks to the three lady members, Mesdames Smith, Davis and Middleton, to whom, together with the secretary, the success of the functions was clue. It was confirm'd that the proceeds of one function be donated to the Ashhurst Patriotic Committee’s fund. At a Hall Committee meeting Mr Woodroofe also presided. Messrs F. Dunstall and W. N. Brewer, a deputation from the Patriotic Committee, explained that it was possible, that their committee Would commence holding social functions for raising funds, and they were delegated to seek the co operation of all bodies holding functions with a view to their relinquishing their dates in favour of the patriotic functions. After a general discussion and an estimate of the expenditure, the committee decided unanimously to advise the deputation that, it will forgo all functions from May 25 till the end of their term of . offiqe;. September 30, if as sured of patriotic functions being held oat* every three weeks. The chairman, who is also a member of the Patriotic Committee, was given full authority to speak on ht half of the Hall Committee. The credit balance in hand was stated to be £l2. It was decided that a start be made with tin. work of lining. On Saturday evening the Ashhurst nranch of the Labour Party held a social function. Mrs R. Cook wen the ladies’ section at cards and Mr G. Anneor the men’s. Hie Monte Carlo was won by Miss D. Haekett and' Mr Robertson, and the lucky Gay Gordons by Mrs Grove and Mr T. Grammer. On behalf of *the Social Committee, Mr M. P. Wilkin extended a welcome and the committee’s thanks to patrons. He assured the assembly that other functions in future would have the full co-operation of the Labour Party if run for the Patriotic purposes. Perfect weather conditions prevailed for the Ashhurst Defence Rifle Club’s competition shoot held over the 3Ooyds range., Hie highest rifle score was a brace of 34 s by R. A. Jones. Details are: —R.
