CHURCH PARADE
AMBULANCE AND RED CROSS. A . parade of .. Palmerston North units of the St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross Society was held yesterday morning to'St.' Andrew s Presbyterian. Church.. The parade was held partly to start the appeal , tor £250,006 tor the faick and, wuunuou Fund of these two societies, and aiso marked the annual parade in memory or Florence Nightingale, yesterday being Florence- Nightingale Day. The total on parade was about IoU, under Colonel J. H. AVhyte, District Officer of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Superintendent i. Brown was m charge of the Palmerston North Ambulance Division, Superintendent C. AVilliams 111 charge of the Railway. -Division and Mrs McCulloch in charge ot Aim Nursing Division. Mrs AV. ra. Richardson, commandant, was in charge ot the Red Cross unit. „ , The preacher was Rev. J. Dud bard, who said that in peacetime the Red Cross Society and tne fat Jomi Ambulance trained peoyle in the seivico of the community, and in uai one of their functions was to provide comforts for the wounded and sick overseas. The ordinary medical units at,the front could not always -cope with the situation after a big battle, and. then the International Led Cross came to their assistance. Hie organisations had set out to raise £250,000 to assist them in their work and he urged the people to suppoit this appeal, saying that it was pait o their duty to do so.
